KARACHI: Giving permission for the setting up of sugar mills in the cotton growing areas is harmful for the economy of the country.
Pakistan Ginners Association (PGA)’s chairman, Sohail Mahmood told Geo News here that the cotton was the basic raw material for textile industry, but by setting up of six sugar mills in the cotton growing areas, cultivators would be induced to grow sugarcane instead of cotton, which would adversely impact the cotton production in the country.
Sohail Mahmood said that Pakistan does not export sugar, while the whole economy hinges on cotton. He said that a ban existed in Punjab on the setting up of new sugar mills, but this was being violated.
