Scientists identify chemical odor of skin cancer

August 22, 2008 |12:56 | Chemical  By : Team X

US chemists have identified the odor that emanates from skin cancer, a development that researchers hope will advance diagnosis and treatment of the deadly disease, said a study out Wednesday.

The creation of a "profile" of the chemical odors linked to skin cancer, may lead to a day when diagnoses can be made by waving a scanner over the skin, researchers told the annual conference of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Doctors have already know that skin cancer carries a particular odor, and recent studies have shown that dogs are able to detect tumors because they smell differently than normal skin.

Richmond chemical spill site cleaner, reports say

June 20, 2008 |15:50 | Chemical | Others  By : Team X

A chemical spill that prompted a shelter-in-place order in Richmond last month left no lasting ecological bruise on the Parchester Village neighborhood or nearby wetlands, inspectors report, and the company that stored the smelly solvent dismantled its tanks.

The May 5 flow of more than 3,000 gallons of toluene, a variety of mineral spirits, into Bruener Marsh also helped along an accumulation of illegally discarded motor oil in a drainage ditch near The Reaction Products Co., according to a report released this month by the Contra Costa Hazardous Materials Program.

The spill might never have left company property if someone had not opened a valve on a backup containment system, inspectors also found.

Slowing U.S. Growth and Rising Oil Prices Cause Slump in Hong Kong Stocks

November 22, 2007 |14:53 | Automobile | Chemical | Oil  By : Team X

A downward revision of the 2008 U.S. economic forecast by the U.S. Federal Reserve, coupled with an upsurge in crude oil prices, has resulted in a slump in Hong Kong’s stocks. The current slump could see the key index going through its worst month post 1997. The revised 2008 economic forecast has shown its impact on Chinese exporters. These exporters have registered declines, with Li & Fung Ltd., the company selling products to American giant WalMart Stores Inc., leading the way. The revised economic forecast is not the only factor responsible for the slump in Hong Kong stocks. Prices of crude oil have gone up to close to $100 per barrel. The speculation about a possible rise in fuel cost based on this increase has had its impact as well, with China Eastern Airline Corp. announcing a possible slump among carriers based on this speculation. The business community is increasingly feeling nervous about the slowdown in growth in the U.S. This factor, coupled with the rising oil prices, has resulted in increasing cost, according to Renault Kam, who is a director of Atlantis Investment Management Ltd. and is based out of Hong Kong. Prices continued to fall this month at China Mobile Ltd. and China Life Insurance Co. This fall was partly due to a delay in implementation of a plan that would allow Chinese citizens to invest in Hong Kong equities directly.

As Demand for Space Tourism Rises, Some Fear Russia Will Fall Behind in Space RaceIt looks like a bonanza for the Russian space industries the planned retirement of the U.S. space shuttle fleet in about three years would make Russia the principal carrier of crews and cargo to the international space station, sharply raising its revenues. But some Russian cosmonauts and space experts are worried. They fear the lead will be short-lived and will slow development of what's really needed a replacement for the veteran Soyuz spacecraft, the reliable but plodding workhorse of the nation's space program for 40 years.

A Soyuz blasted off over the weekend from the Baikonur cosmodrome carrying two cosmonauts to the international space station, along with Charles Simonyi, a U.S. software billionaire who paid $20-25 million for a 13-day trip to the station and back. Russia currently builds two Soyuz spacecraft a year for manned launches, and four unmanned Progress cargo ships. The fleet is expected to expand to four Soyuz and seven Progress vehicles starting in 2010. Unlike the United States' three space shuttles, they can only be used once.
