Sprint Sells Cell Towers For $670 Million

July 25, 2008 |15:45 | Communication  By : Team X

Sprint Nextel announced Thursday it would be selling nearly all of its wireless communication towers to TowerCo for $670 million in cash. Under the terms of the deal, TowerCo will take over the operating and maintenance of approximately 3,300 towers that use Code-Division Multiple Access and Integrated Digital Enhanced Network technologies.

The two companies have also entered into a long-term lease that allows Sprint to run its cellular and WiMax networks from these towers. The deal is expected to close in 90 days. "By leasing rather than owning these network facilities, we can better focus on our core business of providing communication services to consumers, businesses, and government customers," said Bob Azzi, Sprint's senior VP, field engineering and operation, in a statement. "Significantly, this transaction provides Sprint Nextel with additional liquidity which gives us greater flexibility in managing our company."

Disney Will Shut Down Cellphone Service

September 29, 2007 |12:01 | Communication  By : Team X

A year after shuttering its ESPN cellphone company, Walt Disney Co. said it is closing its Disney cellphone service.Walt Disney launched Mobile ESPN and Disney Mobile last year as mobile virtual network operators, or MVNOs. Under that business model, the Burbank, Calif., company leased wireless spectrum from Sprint Nextel Corp. and sold its cellphone service directly to customers. But in the competitive U.S. cellphone market, Disney struggled in its fight against the major carriers.Disney announced in September 2006 that it was closing Mobile ESPN, eight months after its debut. The company initially remained optimistic about its Disney-branded service, which sold phones featuring Disney content and services aimed at children and their parents. However, Disney failed to make headway with the big-box retailers and find outlets to sell its phones and related services.Disney will instead license its content to bigger carriers to sell. Earlier this year, it forged a partnership with Verizon Wireless, which is owned by Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC, to sell ESPN sports news and video. Disney said yesterday it is considering offering some of its Disney-branded services through a partnership with a major carrier. Disney Mobile included services that let parents locate their kids as well as content such as ring tones and games with Mickey Mouse and other Disney stars.

Mapping Out a Data Protection Plan

April 23, 2007 |22:26 | Communication | E-Industry  By : Hardesh Hira

In this fast-paced world, there is one thing most computer users have in common: We have all lost data at one time or another. For the lucky ones, this is not a painful experience -- just one of inconvenience.

Unfortunately for others, the data loss is impacting because the lost data was irreplaceable and valuable. The good news today is that there are many types of data storage solutions available.

As you think about how to protect your data, it's important to understand the different ways in which data can be lost.

Device failure can happen when there is a corrupted area on the disk where your file is located. Your entire drive could fail. When this happens, you have to wipe the disk and reinstall the entire operating system .

In the same vein, equipment failure is more complex. This includes a failure like memory corruption within your computer and requires defective equipment to be replaced and information recovered.

Tossing Your Cell Phone Protect Your Data

April 13, 2007 |23:18 | Communication  By : Hardesh Hira

Most people wouldn’t give away or sell their wireless phone without first deleting their phone book and other personal information. But you should be just as careful if your phone needs to be repaired.

When a cell phone breaks, you either take it back to the store or send it to the insurance company. In either case, you give them your broken phone and usually get a refurbished one in return. That means you get somebody else’s old phone. And eventually, somebody will get yours.
You never want to give away your phone, for any reason, if it contains personal data. You want to pull out the SIM card (if your phone has one) and do a master reset or individual resets to wipe out all the stored data.

Then go through all the menus and make sure everything is gone – the phone book, calendar, notes, and logs of your calls and text messages.

Remember, everything that has been on your phone will stay on your phone, unless you take the time to get remove it.
