Andrew Symonds might be one of the leading all-rounders in world cricket today but Australia can cope without him, according to Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland.
After Symonds skipped a compulsory team meeting before the one-day series against Bangladesh, the team management booted out the Queenslander from the squad. The disciplinary action taken against him has made Symonds contemplate his future with the Australian team.
Though a vital member in the Australian team in all versions of the game but Sutherland says Australian cricket can do without Symonds. The all-rounder is unlikely to be picked for Australia’s four-Test series against India next month.
"It would be a great loss but, at the same time, one of the great things Australian cricket is lucky to have is exciting young talent that is knocking on the door, waiting on the fringes," Sutherland told ABC Radio.
"People like Shane Watson may well get the opportunity, they’ve yearned for for so long, in his absence," he said.Sutherland sent out a strong message to Symonds, saying he must get his act together if he wants to be a part of the extremely disciplined Aussie team, otherwise he can bid goodbye to his international career.
"I think the message the Australian players have sent is that we want Andrew Symonds in our team, but we want Andrew Symonds absolutely committed and wanting to be there. They’re really asking him that question. If he can’t answer that question, it may well be that he’s lost to the team," Sutherland stated.
