The Sensex started the first day of the week on a positive note led by positive global cues and turned back above the 17,000 mark in the early trade. The Nifty was also trading above the 5,000 mark. Metal, realty, banking and auto stocks were the gainers along with heavyweights.
At 9:56 am, the Nifty rose 52 points to 5,050 and the Sensex gained 164 points at 17,013. The CNX Midcap went up 1% to 7,171. About 630 shares advanced while 88 shares declined on the NSE.
DLF, Tata Motors, Sterlite Indusries, Hindalco, Glenmark, Unitech, PNB, SBI, L&T, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Tata Steel, Maruti, Hero Honda, Reliance Industries and ONGC were the gainers. However, Wipro was the loser.
Midcap space:
Mahindra Satyam, Firstsource Solutions and Sesa Goa were up 1.5% each.
PVR surged 7%, as it bought DLF's DT Cinemas. Mid Day Multimedia gained 8% on the back of some regulatory changes.
Dena Bank rose 2%. Aban Offshore went up 3%, as it is going to raise $ 100 million via QIP book.
Educomp Solutions rose 3%. Pipavav Shipyard and Exide Industries gained 2%.
However, Pyramid Saimira tanked 4% and WWIL was down 2%.
Global Cues:
Asian markets extended gains. Shanghai was up over 2%. Hang Seng, Jakarta, Straits Times and Taiwan Weighted gained 1-1.8%. Nikkei and Kospi rose 0.25%.
The US markets posted second consecutive week of gain as dollar continued to lose. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 73 points or 0.72% at 10,270.5; it was up 2.46% for the week and up 17% YTD (year-to-date)
The Nasdaq Composite was up 19 points or 0.88% at 2,168. It was up 2.62% for the week and up 37.5% YTD.
The S&P 500 Index was up 6 points or 0.57% at 1,093.6. It was up 2.26% for the week and up 21% YTD.
Commodities:
The CRB Commodity Index ended flat on Friday, after trading down 0.6% in early trade.
Gold hits a record high at $1026 an ounce.
Silver was up 0.7% at $17.38/ounce.
Crude Oil fell 0.8% at $76.29/barrel.
Copper gained 0.5% to $6520/tonne.
Baltic Dry Index gained 4% on Friday, 12th consecutive day of gains. It gained 38% since October 28.
